DSI and Gulf County Make School Safety a Priority
TALLAHASSEE, FL - DSI has successfully conducted a full scale school safety exercise at Port St. John High School. The Active Shooter Exercise for Gulf County was sponsored by Gulf County Emergency Management. To conduct an effective exercise, subject matter experts (SMEs) and local representatives from several agencies (School District, Sheriff’s Office, and other first responders) have taken part in the planning process and also took part in exercise conduct and evaluation. Exercise development and supporting documentation was produced with input, advice, and assistance from the exercise planning team, which followed the guidance set forth in the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Homeland Security Exercise and Evaluation Program (HSEEP). The Gulf County Active Shooter Situation Manual provided exercise participants with all the necessary tools to carry out their role in the exercise. The Gulf County Active Shooter Exercise was designed to establish a learning environment for players to exercise their plans and procedures for responding to an active shooter incident.
DSI President Linda Berry said, “Gulf County officials continue to be among the leaders in Florida in the area of public safety and school safety. The County and DSI agree that school safety requires key partnership, collaboration and preparation. The event today was successful in reflecting all of these themes.”
